Hello and thank you for your interest in our Montefiore Clinical & Translational Research Center (MUH-CTRC) at the University of Pittsburgh. We are a component of one of a national network of 12 recently awarded Clinical Translational Science Awards (CTSA) at major medical centers that provide optimal settings for medical investigators to conduct intensive, safe, controlled, state-of-the-art, in-patient and out-patient studies. The award of a CTSA to the University of Pittsburgh is being used to created the Clinical Translational Science Institute (CTSI).

The University of Pittsburgh MUH-CTRC has evolved from one of the original Centers established as a General Clinical Research Center by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) when that organization instituted the nation-wide program in the 1960s. Now following many years of continuous operation, we are enhancing and expanding our facilities and resources to foster intensive clinical translational research activities of our physician-scientists in their efforts toward progress and innovation on healthcare issues of concern to us all. Our MUH-CTRC has highly trained research nurses, dietitians, skilled technicians, and administrative personnel to facilitate the research process.

Our primary responsibility is to provide a safe and supportive environment for the volunteers taking part in clinical translational research or participating in intensive clinical trial studies at the University of Pittsburgh. With over 150 active research protocols, we strive to maintain rigorous oversight of all studies. Our MUH-CTRC is involved in every aspect of research conduct - from study design to implementation.

We believe the MUH-CTRC at the University of Pittsburgh provides the specialized and controlled environment essential to the conduct of high quality intensive clinical translational research and we welcome your interest and participation in our Center. On November10, 2006 the center will relocate to our new purpose built, state-of-the-art facility on the 6NE in Montefiore Hospital.

Program Director,Robert A. Branch, M.D. supervises the staff and the administration of the Montefiore Clinical & Translational Research Center(MUH-CTRC) . Dr. Branch is actively involved in promoting multi disciplinary clinical translational science (bench to bedside) by assisting program development not only of ongoing studies within the Center but also by building relationships with disciplines not currently using MUH-CTRC resources. This includes enhancing dialogue between basic and clinical science. In addition he supports quality improvement initiatives implemented by the clinical staff. He is responsible for the organization and operation of all facets of the MUH-CTRC.

Rosemary J. Sabol, BS, MBA, is responsible for the operations of the MUH-CTRC. She has a prominent role in providing potential new investigators with information about the MUH-CTRC resources available. She works as a liason between the University of Pittsburgh and UPMC departments and is also responsible for financial and budgetary oversight for the center, information management and direct supervision of the administrative staff. In addition, she ensures that administrative operations are in compliance with federal, state, local and institutional regulations, and works in accord with NIH policy mandates and recommentations for the center.

Jill Huwe, BSN., is responsible for the direction and supervision of the clinical staff at the MUH-CTRC. She ensures clinical staff competency and continuing education of her staff to meet the requirements of both UPMC and the University of Pittsburgh research requirements.

Judith Arch, RD., supervises the dietary services for the center and provides nutritional guidance to investigators at the MUH-CTRC and other CTRC locations as requested. This ranges from weighting and planning specially designed research meals to meet particular specifications of a protocol to data analysis after the study is completed.
