The Montefiore Clinical and Translational Research Center (MUH-CTRC) offers faculty and staff of the University of Pittsburgh the optimal, state-of-the-art environment in which to conduct clinical research. It is funded by a grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and operates within the auspices of the National Center for Research Resources (NCRR). It is one of approximately 12 centers nation-wide that are committed to translational clinical research. Our centers viability is a tribute to the caliber of the University of Pittsburgh’s clinical investigators. The center has recently relocated to its new state-of-the-art facility on 6NE Montefiore Hospital.

Faculty and staff members from the departments and centers within the six Schools of Health Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) are eligible to carry out IRB approved research studies on the MUH-CTRC. To comply with hospital regulations, one of the investigators must include a physician with UPMC admitting privileges.

The guidlines for using the MUH-CTRC are currently being revised. Please contact the administrative offices at 412-648-6694 with any questions.

    Specialized Research Nutrition Staff

A Bionutritionist (Registered Dietitian) and a full-time Diet Technician provide nutrition services Monday thru Friday, 7AM - 6PM and on weekends and holidays as needed. The CTRC Bionutritionist is available to investigators for consultation during protocol development. After implementation of the protocol, services include instruction on the nutritional aspects of the study to the research subject and if required, patient education on the therapeutic advantages of nutrition as related to their specific disease. The nutrition staff is devoted to the successful management of the nutrition aspect/focus of the protocol. The dietary services are not just for the investigators who utilize the MUH-CTRC but are also available to the investigators at the other CTRC facilities. Arrangements will be made to deliver the diets to those locations as needed. In addition, the dietary staff has also provided research meals prepared for "at home" studies that have lasted up to six weeks.

    Services provided are:

    • Control of Micro and Macro Nutrients via:

      Metabolic balance diet
      Constant diet
      Controlled nutrient diet
      Estimated diet
      Formula diet
Control of Timing for Meal Service

Provision of Meals for Outpatient and Off and On-site Consumption:

    • Direct Nutritional Assessments
    • Anthropometric measurements
    • Bioelectric impedance assays

The Montefiore CTRC is staffed with a specialized research nursing staff that provide patient/family care and prescise implementation of research protocols. The new facility located on 6NE in Montefiore Hospital offers inpatient and outpatient rooms for investigators to conduct their research. We also provide nursing support at the bedside in various areas of the hospital as needed. The center is available to investigators 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The Nurse Clinician will provide expertise in moving a research study from paper to practice, and assist in developing study sheets, physician orders, and the implementation process.

    They are also skilled in...

    • Precise timing of drug administration and blood collection
    • Protocol conduct and management
    • Venipuncture techniques: phlebotomy and intravenous catheters
    • Caring for cancer patients including cytotoxic agent administration and symptom management. Oncology certified nurses are on the staff.
    • Performing complex endocrine diagnostic procedures
    • Preparation of specimens including use of the centrifuge and aliquot of specimens
    • Storage and packing of specimens
    • Acute and emergency care with full support of UPMC Code Team
    • Primary Nursing Model to enhance patient continuity: Same staff manages inpatients and outpatients
Our nursing staff strives to emphasize patient, family, and investigator satisfaction.

Prior to scheduling a patient on the MUH-CTRC, a reservation is required. The form is provided below. After completing the form, please fax it to (412-648-6697). For "research study visits" please complete a UPMC Research Requisition (see link below) and fax it with the reservation form or preferably email it to MUHCTRC@upmc.edu. The Research Requisition is required for every research study visit on the CTRC.

Physician orders must accompany all studies performed on the MUH-CTRC. A copy of the Physician’s Order Sheet and Lab Order Form are provided below. These orders should then be hand-delivered to the MUH-CTRC and deposited in the appropriate bin at the Nurses’ Station.
